Celebrating KSHSAA Football History, as Well as a New Era – Presented by Kansas State High School Athletic Association

A time-honored tradition is experienced in communities across our country on Friday evenings each autumn. This tradition is also part of the very fabric of Kansas school communities as they gather under the lights for a weekly review of what is right in our schools.

The lights shine brightly on the very students who benefit from a program designed to teach valuable life lessons in support of teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment and optimism. Those students include the football players on the field, the cheerleaders rallying the team, the band playing faithfully, the students in the bleachers cheering for their classmates and coaches, and extends to the entire community, including parents, alumni, elected leaders, local business owners, and town members who swell with pride when talking of “their team”.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has produced the book, “Under the Lights: 50 Years of the KSHSAA Football Playoffs”, and is intended to provide an opportunity to celebrate Kansas schools, students, coaches and programs who suit up each game, every season, in pursuit of the championship game and title.

The 2019 season will surely bring excitement all season long, but it certainly will bring something new to the table this year with preseason jamborees. In April, the KSHSAA Board of Directors voted on and passed a proposal to allow football teams to conduct/participate in a preseason jamboree.

The traditional soap scrimmage or intersquad game is still allowable but there will be another option as well. A preseason jamboree is an opportunity for member high schools to participate in a controlled scrimmage with some conditions. The first one is that a jamboree means more than two, but must be three or four teams. This allows for the focus to be developmental as each team are limited to 36 offensive plays, and there are no special teams of any kind. The full list of conditions can be found at kshsaa.org. We are excited to see what our member schools will do with this new initiative this season!

For the KSHSAA staff,

Bill Faflick

Executive Director
