Derby football continues dominating in home opener

The Derby Panthers kicked off their home schedule Friday in impressive fashion, beating Newton 63-7 to improve to 3-0.

The game’s first touchdown, a 70-yard score by junior Lem Wash, came on the opening kickoff.

There was a pretty display of blocking from the Derby Panthers, and some trucking and juking from Wash, who barreled his way to a touchdown on the kickoff return.

It was the first of four touchdowns for Wash.

“It all started with my teammates,” he said. “My team opened up holes for me and set me up to be successful.” 

The Panthers scored 56 in the opening half.

Thanks to three touchdowns from senior running back Tre Washington, the Derby offense continued its domination. The Panthers have scored 160 points. 

The first team defense got two takeaways.

Newton fell to 1-2.

Northwest flexed its defensive prowess en route to a 31-0 win over Great Bend to improve to 3-0.they go on and beat Great Bend 31-0 to start 3-0. Northwest has scored 106 points in the past two games.

Andover Central also proved it is a team to be reckoned with after a 38-21 win over Goddard. It was Goddard’s first loss, while Andover Central is 3-0. The Jaguars have outscored opponents 106-30. 

Bishop Carroll handed West its first loss with a 34-7 victory. Carroll is 2-1.

Maize beat Campus 49-12 and is 3-0. 

Maize South is 3-0 after beating Valley Center 27-19. 

McPherson beat El Dorado 55-16 to improve to 3-0. 

Andale beats Rose Hill 63-0 to start 3-0. 

Belle Plaine beats Independent 59-0 and keep their clean sheet going. The Dragons have outscored opponents 89-0. Belle Plaine improves to 3-0 for the first time since 1992.

Collegiate also improves to 3-0 after a 34-7 win over Mulvane. 

Garden Plain beat Trinity 49-0 to start off undefeated, scoring 135 points in three games. 

Hesston is unbeaten with a 26-0 win over Pratt. 

Hoisington beats Larned 41-19 to start the season 3-0 as well. 

East got its first win, beating Kapaun 22-14. 

Hutchinson beat Garden City 21-12 for its first win, while Salina Central beat Salina South 17-7 to end its winless start. Salina South is 0-3.

On Thursday, Eisenhower beat Andover 20-14, while Southeast beat North. 

Buhler is 3-0 after a 35-21 win over Augusta. 

Cheney, which opened the season with a loss to Garden Plain, won 70-3 against Chaparral. Cheney has scored 138 points.
