For the last game of the regular season, Maize South traveled to Derby in a matchup of two teams that had given up leads in losses to Maize.
But as the teams met Friday night, they both had one goal in mind — get the win and gain momentum going into the playoffs.
For the Panthers, they were able to do just that with a 48-10 victory.
The Panthers came out sporting their new gray jerseys with white trim around their light green numbers and letters. The uniforms, which are Jumpman, sponsored by Jordan, are the only ones of their kind in Kansas. Only 200 teams in the country have football uniforms sponsored by Jordan.
It was the second straight year, the Panthers took care of business by beating Maize South. The Panthers beat the Mavericks 55-7 in 2019.
The Panthers were clicking on all cylinders early. They forced an early three-and-out and then scored on the first play on a 37-yard Lem Wash.
After a back-and-forth defensive first quarter after the first touchdown, the Panthers were able to strike again, this time from Dylan Edwards on a 27-yard-run.
For the majority of the game, the backfield of Wash and Edwards was impressive. Edwards had three touchdowns, while Lem ran for three and threw for one to Drake Thatcher.
“It felt good to come back, we knew who we were so it felt good to prove to everyone who we are,” Wash said.
Wash had 187 rushing yards while Edwards had 237.
In another game in the AVCTL I the Hutchinson Salthawks played the Maize Eagles with the league championship on the line.
The Salthawks won 32-28.
The game came down to the wire for the third week in a row for the Eagles.
Though the Eagles were undefeated, Hutchinson came into the game as a one-loss team and showed today that they are a legit state contender again.
After losing to Andover the Salthawks bounced back and ran through everyone else. T
It was a matchup of two strong offenses — Hutchinson is led by quarterback Myles Thompson and running back Alec McCuan, Maize by quarterback Avery Johnson and running back Josh Sanders.
The Eagles came into the game keying in on McCuan so Thompson was able to do his thing. Thompson scored twice on the ground, ultimately giving the Salthawks the victory as his second touchdown came with seven seconds left in the game.
Bishop Carroll played host to St. Thomas Aquinas and dominated.
Quarterback Aidan Niedens contributed with three rushing touchdowns in the first half as the Golden Eagles went on to win 35-14. The Eagles finished the regular season 5-2.
Andale beat Collegiate in the battle of the undefeateds 43-14.
Andover Central beat Ark City 37-6 to finish the regular season 6-1.
Northwest rolled past South 63-0 to win the City League title again.
Kapaun beat Hays 24-6. The Crusaders are 6-1.
McPherson beat Augusta 32-14 and finish the regular season 7-1.
Cheney finished the season undefeated after a 48-22 win over Larned.
Garden Plain finished 7-1 after a 57-0 win over Bluestem.
Clearwater beat Hesston 42-25 to finish 6-2.
Andover bounced back from a loss tot Andover Central. The Trojans won 20-13 and is 5-3.
Conway Springs beat Sedgwick 41-35 despite giving up 21 fourth-quarter points.
Conway Springs was led by Jonathan Wright’s 295 rushing yards, Heath Hilger added 126 and Cole Schulte had 107 yards.
Sedgwick was led by Lance Hoffsommer’s 212 passing yards.
