State Golf Recap

After day one of the 5A golf tournament, Kapaun Mount Carmel trailed St. Thomas Aquinas by four strokes, but the Crusaders bounced back on the second day of the tournament at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

They shot 294 for a two-day total of 607, which were two strokes clear of Aquinas and six shots clear of Maize South.

Senior Brent Reintjes was on fire on the second day for Kapaun, firing an eight under 64. Freshman phenom Asher Whitaker also went under par the second day, shooting 71. Reintjes finished third individually, while Whitaker finished fourth.

4A

Wellington ran away with the 4A championship, winning by 32 shots over Wamego at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City.

Junior Deitrek Gill won the individual title by shooting a two-day total of two under 142. Gill’s teammate, Blake Saffel, finished two shots back.

3A

Wichita State signee Luke Scheufler from Wichita Trinity shot 69-68 to win the 3A individual championship at Hesston Golf Course.

He won the individual title by five shots.

Cheney took second for the team title, finishing 14 strokes behind Santa Fe Trail. Trinity finished third as a team.

2A

Salina Sacred Heart rolled through the 2A championship, winning 63 shots over Sterling at Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Caleb Gilliland, who shot 74-70 and took second and Kameron Shaw, who shot 74-76 and took fourth, led the Knights.
