In a battle of the west side, Bishop Carroll traveled to Maize to take on junior quarterback Avery Johnson and the Eagles, who entered the game 7-2.
Johnson had four rushing touchdowns, leading Maize to the 28-21 victory in the Class 5A quarterfinals.
But it was Bishop Carroll that jumped out to a 14-0 lead, thanks to two Chase Smash passing touchdowns.
Maize bounced back behind Johnson, who had a 28-yard touchdown run.
Late in the third quarter, Johnson added another rushing score, knotting the score up at 14.
After an exchange of scores to tie it at 21-all in the final minute, Johnson led Maize down the field for a touchdown with 30 seconds remaining.
Maize (8-2) will play Hays (8-2) in the quarterfinals.
In the Class 6A quarterfinals, Derby junior running back Dylan Edwards stole the show. He scored seven touchdowns, including six in the first half, as the Panthers cruised to a 63-26 win over Wichita East.
Edwards had 272 rushing yards on 20 carries for six touchdowns. His seventh touchdown came on a 66-yard punt return.
Derby raced to a 14-0 lead, but East responded to get within 14-6 and then 21-12.
Edwards got a 46-yard touchdown, though, as Derby scored 42 unanswered points.
Derby (9-0) will play host to Lawrence Free State (8-2).
The Panthers ended East’s six-game winning streak.
Wichita Northwest lit up the scoreboard once again with the three-headed monster backfield of Cencere Thompson, LJ Phillips and quarterback Geremiah Moore en route to a 66-21 win over Salina Central.
The Grizzlies have won seven straight games.
Northwest (8-2) will play Kapaun (9-1) in a showdown of the City League in the quarterfinals.
Kapaun handled Maize South 37-21 to advance to the quarterfinals against Northwest.
The Crusaders beat Northwest 34-17 in Week 3 of the regular season.
Cheney took care of business against Collegiate with a 21-3 win.
The Cardinals are 10-0 and regional champions for the first time in school history. Cheney will play host to SE-Saline (10-0) in the quarterfinals.
Mulvane (8-2) extended its winning streak to eight games after edging McPherson 18-16. Mulvane led 18-0 and then had to hold of the Bullpups.
The Wildcats move on to play at Buhler in the 4A quarterfinals.
Buhler improved to 9-1 with a 59-20 win over Winfield.
Andover Central improved to 9-1 with a 49-10 win over Circle.
Andover Central will play at Wamego (9-1) in the 4A quarterfinals.
Andale scored 38 first-half points and went on to beat Holcomb 51-0 and improve to 10-0.
The Indians had 320 rushing yards on 49 attempts.
Andale will play at Concordia (8-2) in the 3A quarterfinals.
Conway Springs took care of Plainville 27-14.
After a 0-0 first-quarter tie, Conway Springs opened the second quarter with an Izic Billups 85-yard punt return for the 7-0 lead at 11:18. Six minutes later, Brayden Kunz scored on a 5-yard run and five minutes later, Billups completed a TD pass to Kunz for the 21-0 halftime lead.
Kunz had three touchdowns in the win.
Conway Springs (8-2) will play at Inman (10-0) in the 1A quarterfinals. Inman beat Oakley 54-16
Hillsboro improved to 9-1 with a 41-14 win over Chaparral. Hillsboro will play at Beloit in the 2A quarterfinals. Beloit beat Cimarron 51-6 and is 7-3.
Hillsboro is back in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.
Kingman beat Garden Plain 28-21 for the second time this season. Kingman (9-1) will play Thomas More Prep (8-2) in the 2A quarterfinals.
Kingman is in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1999.
Sedgwick improved to 10-0 with a 33-6 win over Ell-Saline and will play at Smith Center (9-1). Smith Center beat Remington 56-6.
