Rawlins County-Atwood’s Trey Carlson – Northwest Kansas Fan’s Choice Mr. Basketball – Presented by Shelter Insurance

Rawlins County senior Trey Carlson has built his reputation on competitiveness, resilience, and a steady drive to improve. A multi-sport athlete in football and basketball, Carlson has embraced his role as a small forward on the court while developing into a player who lets his performance do the talking.

“I’ve always had a strong competitive edge, losing isn’t something I accept easily, and that mindset is what pushes me to keep improving every day.”

Carlson’s journey has been shaped by strong influences both on and off the court. His faith and family sit at the center of everything he does, providing both motivation and perspective as he navigates his final year of high school athletics.

“My biggest inspiration is my Grammie. She’s always been there for me and has taught me important life lessons about resilience, character, and staying grounded.”

“Above all, my faith is what inspires me most. I thank God for making all of this possible and for guiding me through every challenge and opportunity.”

His development as a player has also been impacted by key coaching figures, including time spent playing in Texas under a coach who emphasized growth beyond the game.

“I’m also grateful for the time I spent playing under my coach in Texas, Todd. He truly cared about his players and pushed us to grow not only as athletes, but as people.”

Carlson’s senior season delivered defining moments that highlighted his potential. From achieving his first in-game dunk to delivering a dominant 27-point, 21-rebound performance off the bench, he proved he can take over when given the opportunity.

“This past season was especially meaningful. I had my first in-game dunk during the final game of the year, something I had worked toward for a long time.”

“I also had a standout performance coming off the bench, where I scored 27 points and 21 rebounds. Moments like those showed me what I’m capable of when I stay focused and confident.”

Off the court, Carlson’s story carries deeper meaning. After returning home following a serious accident involving his sister, he found a renewed sense of purpose and appreciation.

“Watching her fight to recover gave me a new perspective and motivated me to push myself even harder, knowing how quickly things can change.”

Adjusting to a new coaching staff brought its own challenges, but Carlson credits the experience with helping the team grow stronger together.

“At the start of the season, adjusting to a new head coach wasn’t easy, but as time went on, we built trust and came together as a team.”

“Our assistant coach also made a big impact, he brought energy every day, stayed patient, and supported everyone no matter their role.”

Family remains a constant source of strength for Carlson, especially throughout his senior season. Their presence and encouragement fuel his effort every time he competes.

“My mom has always been there for me and never misses a game and supports me no matter where I’m at.”

“My dad is my biggest supporter and loudest, always trying to make me better no matter what.”

“I love them so much and they both push me to be the best version of myself.”

As his high school career winds down, Carlson continues to represent Rawlins County with pride, carrying the values of hard work, faith, and perseverance into every game.

“I’m someone who stays focused, works hard, and lets my game speak for itself. I take pride in competing, improving, and representing where I come from.”
