Ava Marrs discovered her interest in business through a hands-on class experience that eventually led to a leadership role at Campus High School’s student-run coffee shop.
Marrs said her introduction to business came during her time in the Youth Entrepreneurs class, which helped spark her curiosity about how businesses operate.
“I was part of our Youth Entrepreneurs class,” Marrs said. “This class sparked my interest in how businesses are run.”
That early exposure opened the door to more opportunities. Marrs was selected as a worker at the school’s Stompin’ Grounds Coffee Shop during her junior year before advancing into a management position as a senior.
Now serving as a manager, Marrs plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of the student-led business.
“I am a current manager of the student-led Stompin’ Grounds Coffee Shop at Campus,” Marrs said. “I have helped interview and train new workers. I have a group of four students that I lead in the coffee shop every other day.”
In addition to leading her team, Marrs contributes to the shop’s overall success by managing inventory and helping develop new ideas.
“I also help with stocking the coffee shop, market new drinks and new ideas,” Marrs said. “I enjoy making and serving drinks to students and staff.”
While Marrs does not plan to pursue a traditional business career after high school, she said the skills she has gained will still play an important role in her future.
“I plan to major in health and physical education for my bachelor’s and get a master’s in athletic training,” Marrs said. “The business department and serving as a manager in the school’s coffee shop have given me many skills so I will be successful in college and later on in my career.”
