For Wyatt Sharp, success this golf season has been about more than scores and medals. The Circle High School standout has embraced a leadership role while continuing to establish himself as one of the top golfers in Kansas Class 4A.
“My focus for this season has been to help the new kids coming up and go into this season having fun and finish as strong as possible,” Sharp said.
That leadership mentality has helped create a positive atmosphere for Circle while also pushing Sharp to another impressive campaign. His low round this season is a 71, and he has recorded one tournament win along with five top-10 finishes. Sharp currently sits sixth in the state rankings for Class 4A.
While the numbers stand out, Sharp takes just as much pride in helping teammates improve their games.
“One of my best strengths is helping others on the team,” he said. “I really enjoy helping them grow their skills with ball striking and putting, or giving them rides and just trying to help strengthen the mental side of their game.”
Sharp said one of the biggest areas of growth for him personally has come mentally. Along with working on his swing, he has focused heavily on staying composed and controlling what he can during competition.
“My swing coach and I have really tried to find some ways for me to help with my mental side of the game and not allowing myself to get caught up in what I can’t control,” Sharp said.
That mindset has become one of the biggest lessons of his career.
“My biggest takeaway has been learning and focusing solely on what I can control in each moment,” he said.
Sharp’s consistency has been evident over the past two seasons. Last year, he also posted a low round of 71 while collecting two wins and five top-10 finishes. This spring, he hopes to help Circle close the year with a strong postseason push.
“Coming up to the end of the season we are all looking for a top three at state and maybe just a little better,” Sharp said.
