Senior offensive lineman Maddox McGinnis of Wichita Northwest High School is heading into his final prep football season with a clear focus on leadership, physical development and helping a young roster compete at a high level in Kansas Class 6A.
After a year in which Wichita Northwest graduated a significant portion of its production, McGinnis said the opportunity to help guide the next wave of players has become one of his biggest motivations.
“I’m most excited about competing with this group of guys and seeing what we’re capable of as a team,” McGinnis said. “We graduated a lot of talented players last year, so we’re a young team, but we’ve put in a ton of work this offseason. I believe in this group, and I truly think we can compete with anybody.”
Now entering his senior season, McGinnis said his mindset has shifted toward being a stabilizing presence for younger teammates while also elevating his own game along the offensive line.
“Personally, I’m excited to be the senior that younger players can look up to and rely on — I learned how to be a leader from some of the best and now it’s my turn,” he said. “I’m also looking forward to showcasing how much I’ve grown as an offensive lineman and helping set the tone up front. I want to be someone my teammates can count on every snap, play a physical brand of football, and do everything I can to help lead our team on a deep playoff run.”
The offseason, McGinnis said, was centered on a complete physical transformation aimed at improving explosiveness, speed and overall athleticism while maintaining strength in the trenches.
“This offseason has been all about transforming my body and elevating my game,” he said. “My focus was lowering my body fat, building lean muscle, becoming more explosive, and improving my speed without losing strength. I spent countless hours in the weight room, cleaned up my nutrition, and stayed consistent with conditioning and speed training.”
He also emphasized technical refinement as a key part of his preparation, particularly in his footwork and ability to finish blocks through the whistle.
“I’ve also continued improving my footwork, technique, and mobility while competing against top talent at camps,” McGinnis said. “I feel like I’ve made the biggest physical transformation of my career, and I’m excited to show how much faster, leaner, and more athletic I’ve become.”
One of his primary goals entering the season is consistency, especially late in games when physical and mental fatigue can take over along the offensive line.
“One area I’ve really focused on is becoming more consistent with my footwork and finishing every block,” he said. “My goal is to dominate from the first whistle to the last. During the offseason, I worked on agility drills, hand placement, leverage, and conditioning so I can play fast and physical on every snap, especially late in the game.”
McGinnis enters his senior season with a strong list of accolades from last year, including Greater Wichita Athletic League First Team Offensive Line honors and Kansas 6A All-State honorable mention recognition from multiple outlets. He also earned All-Metro Second Team Offensive Line honors and was named to several additional all-state honorable mention lists. In the offseason, he was named Under Armour Next Camp MVP and received Academic All-American honors.
Individually, McGinnis said he is aiming for even more recognition in his final season.
“Individually, my goal is to be one of the top offensive linemen in Kansas and earn First Team All-State honors,” he said. “I also want to take on a bigger leadership role, both on and off the field, and help my teammates succeed.”
