After helping lead Wichita Northwest to yet another successful season in 2025, Brock Martin believes the Grizzlies are being overlooked heading into the new campaign.
With several key starters gone, many expect Northwest to take a step back. Martin doesn’t see it that way.
“I’m excited for this season because we are going to be the underdogs this season,” Martin said. “People think we won’t be as good as last year’s team because we lost a lot of starters, but I believe we will be the same dangerous team we was last year.”
Martin enters the season with plenty of momentum after earning first-team all-league honors at center and second-team all-state recognition last fall. While those accomplishments were significant, his focus has shifted to improving both individually and as a leader for a younger team.
Throughout the offseason, Martin has stayed committed to his development. He has participated in team weightlifting sessions while also working with speed trainer Rashad Daniels to improve his athleticism.
“I have been doing team lifts and working out with my speed trainer Rashad Daniels,” Martin said. “I have also been trying to become a better leader.”
Martin said leadership has become one of his biggest priorities as Northwest prepares for the season.
“I am wanting to improve on being a better leader,” he said. “Ways I worked on being a better leader is being more vocal to my teammates and motivate them if they’re struggling.”
Martin has set lofty individual goals for his senior season. He hopes to earn first-team all-state honors, become a three-time first-team all-league center and receive an invitation to the Kansas Shrine Bowl.
“My goals for the season is to get first-team all-state, be a 3x first-team all-league center, and to make it to the Shrine Bowl,” Martin said.
While individual accolades would be meaningful, Martin said the team’s goals remain at the forefront.
“For the team, our goal is to go to state and win it,” he said.
