After putting together one of the most productive defensive seasons in Class 6A last year, Derby linebacker Mason Moaliitele is focused on helping his team reach the next level.
Moaliitele recorded 108 tackles in just eight games because of an injury, averaging 13.1 tackles per game, the highest mark in Class 6A. He also added seven tackles for loss, two interceptions and one sack during the season, earning first-team non-senior all-state honors and first-team all-league recognition.
Now, as he prepares for another season, Moaliitele’s motivation remains centered on his teammates and his love for the game.
“I’m most excited for playing with my guys and getting to play the sport I love,” Moaliitele said.
The linebacker has spent the offseason working to improve his physical abilities and prepare for a bigger role on the field. Derby has participated in multiple team camps during the summer, giving players opportunities to compete and continue developing together.
“I’ve been grinding to get faster and stronger, we’ve had a lot of team camps this summer so far,” Moaliitele said.
While Moaliitele has already established himself as a top defender, he is looking to add more versatility to his game this season. One area he has emphasized is improving his coverage skills and creating more opportunities to make plays in the passing game.
“One thing I want to work on this year is my pass drops, I want more interceptions so I’ve been working on hip flexibility and opening up,” Moaliitele said.
With another season ahead, Moaliitele has set high expectations for himself and the Derby defense. His goals include helping the team compete for a state championship while continuing to develop as one of the state’s top defenders.
“Some goals I have for this season is to win state as a team and win DPOY,” Moaliitele said.
