Nine consecutive league championships and a third-place finish at the state tournament have established Eureka as one of the area’s premier girls basketball programs. Senior Ellie Coulter is determined to make sure that tradition continues.
With new head coach Brenden Ptacek taking over, Coulter is excited about the opportunity to lead the Tornadoes into another successful season.
“There is truly no culture like Eureka Girls Basketball, and the family-like atmosphere this program has created is something I am so proud to be a part of,” Coulter said. A third-team KBCA Class 2A all-state selection last season, Coulter also earned honorable mention recognition from The Wichita Eagle and second-team War on 54 all-tournament honors.
Despite those accomplishments, Coulter spent the offseason improving her game, particularly her ability to attack the basket against taller defenders.
The 5-foot-5 guard has trained regularly with Wichita’s Mark Washington while focusing on footwork, ball handling and finishing around the rim.
“I want to become more confident in my abilities, trust the work I have put in, and not hesitate when opportunities present themselves,” Coulter said.
Beyond individual improvement, Coulter understands her responsibility as a senior leader. She hopes to encourage her teammates while maintaining the program’s championship expectations.
The Tornadoes’ goals include another league title and building on last season’s state tournament success.
“I want to become someone my teammates can look to for encouragement, support, and leadership throughout the ups and downs of the season,” Coulter said.
