For Garden City High School’s Josslynn George, the balance between books and volleyball comes naturally. “What I love most about being a student-athlete at Garden City High School is how supportive and understanding everyone is,” George said. “The teachers always help me catch up on anything I miss, and the coaches make sure school comes first. It’s nice knowing they all want us to succeed both on and off the court.”
Now a sophomore, George has been playing volleyball nearly her entire life — and her dedication shows every time she steps onto the court. “I started playing recreational volleyball when I was in kindergarten and began playing club volleyball when I was 10,” she said. That early start has built a foundation of skill, leadership, and love for the game that continues to grow.
Her development as a setter has been one of her proudest areas of progress. “The biggest improvement in my game this season is my court awareness,” George said. “After gaining more experience during my freshman year, I can see the court better, read my hitters, and understand blocking matchups more clearly. It’s helped me make smarter decisions as a setter.”
And when it comes to serving, George doesn’t hesitate. “I definitely prefer a jump serve,” she said. “It lets me be more aggressive and gives me better control of where the ball goes.”
Even though she’s the only setter running Garden City’s 5-1 system this year, George embraces the challenge. “We run a 5-1 this year, so I’m the only setter,” she said. “Even though I’m the only one, I give my all every day and keep pushing myself to improve because there’s always more to learn.”
George also finds motivation in her teammates — especially one who stands out. “The teammate who impresses me the most is freshman Sophie Doll,” she said. “She’s an absolute beast on the court — always ready for the ball and able to adjust to any set.”
Off the court, George enjoys hanging out with family and friends, snacking on fruit snacks before games, and staying active. Looking ahead, her goals are clear: “After I graduate, I’d love to continue playing volleyball at the next level,” she said. “I just want the opportunity to keep playing the sport I love.”
