While Colby senior Cody Wright had to adjust to a new role this season, he adapted.

“I took on my offensive role well and have been doing my job on defense,” he said. “I became a leader for this team, and it all started because of my faith.”

Following Week 8, Wright had 1,300 all-purpose yards, as well as 12 touchdowns on the season. On defense, he had two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown, and had more than 50 tackles.

“He’s the kind of player who sets the tone without saying a word – his effort, focus and consistency speak louder than any pep talk ever could,” coach Ryan Mosier said.

“Cody’s combination of speed, strength and football IQ make him a difference-maker on both sides of the ball. But what truly makes him special is his ability to elevate the players around him through his example.”

Wright set the standard in the offseason by working in the weight room and on speed training.

“From last year to this year, Cody has made huge strides in confidence, physical development and overall football awareness,” Mosier said. “He’s become more decisive as a runner and more disciplined in his reads on defense.

“His offseason commitment to training has transformed him from a talented athlete in a true every-down player. Cody’s growth has been steady, earned and evident to everyone in the program.”

Wright’s leadership has been vital throughout.

“I help us succeed by being a team leader and keep playing till the last whistle,” he said. “Along with just giving us energy when we need it – like a big run or just celebrating our guys after a big play or lifting them up after a mistake – just letting them know that I’m there for them.”

It helps that it’s impossible to miss what a good person Wright is.

“What I want to accomplish this season is to make an impact on my teammates and community as I leave this year,” he said. “I changed the culture of our team this year with showing my faith in Christ. And others have followed. I really just want to show the love of Jesus while playing the game I love, and have a lasting impact on everyone I’m around.”

Mosier added: “He treats teammates, coaches and classmates with respect and sets a standard for what it means to be a Colby Eagle. As a player, he’s dependable, coachable and competitive in everything he does. You can count on him to give his best, whether it’s a practice rep, a game snap or representing his team in the community.”
