Derby High School’s Channing Marshall is on a mission this season. After coming up short of a state title last year, the senior guard/forward is determined to help lead the Panthers back to the top. “I want to win state and make up for not doing it last year,” Marshall said. “I also want to be one of the best two-way players in the state.”

That drive for success doesn’t just come from talent; it comes from hard work. During the offseason, Marshall stayed dedicated to improving every aspect of his game. “I’ve been doing skill training, weight training, and conditioning,” he said. “I also went to a couple of camps like the Washburn and Friends camps.” Those experiences helped him sharpen his game and prepare to take on a leadership role in his senior season.

While Marshall has his eyes on state, he’s also looking forward to the everyday experiences that make high school basketball special. “I’m looking forward to the locker room moments, team dinners, and postgame wins blasting music,” he said.

Reflecting on last season, Marshall is especially proud of Derby’s incredible 21-2 record. “When people hear it, they respect it,” he said.

Off the court, Marshall is already thinking about his future beyond basketball. After graduation, he plans to attend a trade school while working part-time, eventually pursuing a blue-collar career that allows him to work with his hands and build something meaningful. And while basketball is his main focus now, he plays tennis in the spring with teammate and friend Cale Clingan.
