Washburn Rural’s Simon Rowley – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Dave Tew Shelter Insurance

By Angela Brunk

Class of 2026 point guard Simon Rowley enters the upcoming season at Washburn Rural High School with momentum, confidence, and a renewed drive. After stepping away from basketball during his sophomore year, Rowley returned with a determination that has fueled his growth. “I’m proud because I had to bounce back after not playing sophomore year and working hard every day,” he said. That resilience has shaped him into one of the most impactful players in the Centennial League.

This year, Rowley’s personal goals extend beyond scoring. He aims to embrace a true leadership role, on and off the court, while sharpening his attention to detail. Individually, his aspirations are high. Rowley wants to be named 6A First Team All-State and Centennial League MVP, both firmly on his radar. For team goals, Rowley and the team want to go undefeated in the Centennial League again, win in-season tournaments, take substate, and bring home a state championship.

Rowley is especially excited about the new opponents on this year’s schedule, opportunities to showcase the team’s talent. He also looks forward to the memorable parts of the season, team meals, bonding, and building chemistry.

His offseason was defined by constant improvement. Rowley trained every day, focusing on his three-point shot and explosiveness, while attending multiple camps and tournaments to compete against elite talent.

Last season, he nearly averaged 14 points, 2 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game, averaged the most points per game in the Centennial League, and helped Washburn Rural become 6A Substate Champions. His accolades include 1st Team Centennial League, All-City First Team, Showdown First Team, Newcomer of the Year, and 6A honors, achievements he credits to his coaches.

Looking ahead, Rowley plans to play college basketball and study business, trusting the next step will unfold according to God’s plan.
