James Lyman is a junior at Derby High School and is involved in multiple athletic and academic pursuits. He competes in cross country and track and field, and he is also a diver for the school’s swim team. Balancing multiple sports has helped Lyman develop strong discipline, time management, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
This season, Lyman is especially excited about the opportunity to attend the state meet with his teammates. Beyond the competition itself, he looks forward to spending time with the team and sightseeing around the town where state is hosted. These shared experiences make the season meaningful and motivate him to work harder.
During the offseason, Lyman remained dedicated to improving his diving skills by attending dive clinics and training on a trampoline. One of his main goals for this year is to successfully perform more difficult dives. To achieve this, he has spent time watching instructional videos and fully implementing the techniques and feedback provided by his coaches.
Lyman has both individual and team goals for the year. As a team, he hopes all of the divers qualify for state. Personally, he aims to attend the state meet as both a swimmer and a diver. Last year, Lyman accomplished an important milestone by qualifying for state and placing second at a dive meet held at Campus High School, which further fueled his motivation.
Outside of athletics, Lyman is a competitive piano player and maintains a strong academic record with a 4.013 GPA. After high school, he plans to participate in his church’s mission program before attending Brigham Young University for pre-med studies. His long-term goals include earning a master’s degree, completing medical school, and joining the Army. Lyman’s dedication and drive continue to set him apart both in and out of competition.
