There’s a side of Eve Long that coach Nikki Hoffman points to as incredibly important when talking about the 6-foot-3 junior, who is ranked No. 8 in the nation for the Class of 2027.
“She has made an enormous impact on the future of women’s basketball by her positive interactions with young girls at our games and at camps,” Hoffman said.
And the impact on the court has been just as impressive.
Long helped lead Olathe South to a 20-6 record, along with individual stats that are undeniably outstanding – 32.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 1.4 blocks and 1.0 assists per game. In a win over Olathe North in January, she scored 37 points and had 15 rebounds.
Long is the VYPE Kansas 2025-26 editors choice girls basketball player of the year sponsored by Shelter Insurance.
“Eve is unstoppable 1 on 1,” Hoffman said. “Her length, speed and body control allows her to counter any defender.
“She can dominate the boards due to her ability to elevate above any other player. Her athleticism and countless hours in the gym has allowed her to be able to score at will.
“She is truly an exceptional athlete with a formidable drive to be the best.”
Olathe South battled injuries during the season, but the team still qualified for the Class 6A tournament.
The reason? Long points to the team’s selflessness, hard work and willingness to play together.
Her skills also progressed throughout her high school career.
“Definitely just growing my game and versatility from an offensive and defensive standpoint. Of course my points per game and efficiency has improved, but also my confidence,” she said.
During the offseason she spent time on getting better, too.
“Perimeter work, being able to handle the ball against pressure and becoming a three-level scorer” were all critical areas Long spent time on.
Certainly her size is a big factor in her ability to dominate, but it’s so much more than that.
“(It’s) the fact that I’m coachable and always willing and have the want to learn and get better,” she said.
