At St. James Academy, junior pitcher John West is preparing for a season defined by growth, leadership, and renewed team focus. As a key member of the varsity baseball team, West is eager to showcase both his personal development and the collective improvement of his squad. With high expectations, he is especially motivated for rivalry matchups against Bishop Miege and St. Thomas Aquinas, games that always bring intensity and excitement.
During the offseason, West dedicated himself to elevating his game. He attended college camps to gain exposure and better understand the demands of collegiate baseball. Training at HomeField with Natural Baseball Academy, he focused on refining his mechanics and expanding his pitching arsenal. Notably, he added a cutter and significantly improved his changeup, which he now considers his most effective pitch. His emphasis on movement and control has positioned him to take a major step forward this season.
West also recognizes the importance of team dynamics. After reflecting on last year, he believes improved chemistry and a stronger attitude will be critical to success. His team’s goals include finishing with a winning record and securing victories in key rivalry games.
Statistically, West has shown his commitment to the sport. In limited varsity action last season, he posted a 0.00 ERA over nine innings, recording seven strikeouts, just two walks, and holding opponents to a .125 batting average. This year, he aims to throw 65% strikes, achieve a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and maintain a sub-3.00 ERA.
Beyond baseball, West is a well-rounded student and leader, participating in NHS, Science NHS, and serving as a house captain. Looking ahead, he hopes to play college baseball while pursuing a career in engineering or finance.
