As a senior and three-year team captain for the Bennington softball program, Haylee Blake understands the responsibility that comes with leading from the circle.
Blake has been playing softball for 11 years, and during that time she has developed into a key piece of the Bennington lineup. As the team’s pitcher, she relies heavily on her mental focus whenever she steps into the circle.
“I would definitely say my mental focus when I’m pitching is one of my biggest strengths,” Blake said.
That focus becomes even more important in the high-pressure moments that often come with pitching. Blake says staying locked in and continuing to improve is something she emphasizes every time she practices or competes.
“My mindset is to keep getting better each time for myself and for my team,” Blake said. “We want to end my final season by going to state.”
Blake has set an ambitious personal goal for her senior season as well—reaching the milestone of 400 career strikeouts. At the same time, her focus remains centered on helping the Bulldogs achieve something even bigger as a group.
“Our team goal is to finally make it to state and make program history,” Blake said.
As a three-year captain and the team’s pitcher, Blake recognizes that leadership comes naturally with her position.
“I feel like being the pitcher plays into my leadership role,” Blake said.
Much of Blake’s development has also come from the extra work she puts in outside of the high school season, including playing travel softball and continuing to train during the offseason.
