Bishop Carroll’s Ella Avey – Athlete Spotlight

Bishop Carroll senior Ella Avey brings experience, energy and a determined mindset to the volleyball court as one of the team’s seasoned setters.

Avey, a member of the Class of 2027, values the responsibility that comes with helping lead an offense. Still, she sees the setter role as a team strength rather than an individual spotlight.

“I’m one of the seasoned setters on our high school team, but our team is lucky enough to have another great setter on varsity and many others who could step in to set if we need it.”

That depth complements a group Avey believes is prepared to make an impact this season. She enjoys the talent and enthusiasm surrounding her each day in practice and competition.

“Our team is full of talent and energy that makes it very fun to play with. I am really excited to see what we will do this season when we combine all our strengths together.”

Avey especially appreciates the hustle and encouragement her teammates provide. Regan Daugherty supplies a vocal presence and is known for pursuing difficult balls, while Lauren DeGroot brings humor to the group.

“Regan Daugherty is the most vocal on the team and Lauren DeGroot keeps me laughing on and off the court.”

“Regan Daugherty is the teammate who will always be rolling and sprawling for a ball to get a touch on it.”

Her favorite serve is a jump serve, particularly because a well-hit float or topspin serve can make life difficult for opponents. Avey also enjoys the intensity of rivalry matches, identifying Kapaun’s gym as one of the most challenging places to compete.

“Kapaun’s gym is the toughest to play in. They are another Catholic school here in Wichita and are our rivals, which makes it fun to play them.”

Athletics has also shaped Avey beyond volleyball. She credits sports with teaching her perseverance and a willingness to work harder than the competition.

“Athletics has taught me about grit and determination, if you have a strong work ethic you can out work anyone in the gym.”

Away from the court, Avey enjoys running, traveling and spending time with friends. History is her favorite subject, and she is active at Bishop Carroll as a senior house leader in the Community System, a St. Gianna Health Academy selection and a track athlete. She expects to complete at least 71 hours of community service by the end of the school year.

Her parents remain her greatest inspiration because of “their strength, kindness, determination, faith and the way they treat others to be the person I want to become.”
