Burrton’s Ryker Barnes – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Hutchinson Community College

By Matt Browning

Ryker Barnes has entered the new track season with a clear priority — the 800-meter run — and a goal of shaving down his time as he pushes toward potential postseason qualification.

“My primary focus for this season is the 800m race; my goal is to get a time of 2:06 or faster, and hopefully qualify for state with that time,” Barnes said.

After running a personal best of 2:13 last season in the event, Barnes said his training has centered on improving the strength and speed needed for the demanding middle-distance race.

“I wanted to improve overall leg strength so I could push faster for the 800m, so I made sure to continue going to weights during the offseason to maintain muscle,” he said.

Barnes said his approach this year has also shifted due to changes in team numbers, moving more of his focus to individual events rather than relays.

“We don’t have enough members to qualify for state or anything as a team, so most events matter more as an individual athlete,” Barnes said. “A successful season would be our three top runners medaling throughout the season and hopefully qualifying for state.”

Even with that individual focus, Barnes said he plays an important role in team leadership, particularly in preparing teammates during practices and meets.

“The strengths of mine that benefit my team are that I am social and focused as I help lead the team, often in warm-ups and other areas,” he said.
