As a junior catcher for the Chanute Blue Comets, Mylee Miller is ready to embrace a bigger role in Southeast Kansas softball this season. After earning Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore playing catcher for the first time, Miller is focused on building both her leadership skills and her performance behind the plate. “Jumping into a leadership role on the team is something I’m really looking forward to,” Miller said. “I may only be a junior, but with only one senior, I want to step up and be a better leader as an upperclassman.”
As the team’s catcher, Mylee understands the importance of communication. “The catcher has to have a powerful voice. I hope that I am a positive influence for everyone.”
Miller has set high goals for herself offensively. She aims to lead the Blue Comets in on-base percentage and RBIs. “On-base percentage means I’m seeing pitches and making good contact consistently. I also want to be our RBI leader, because it shows I can be a team player and help score runs.”
Last season, Chanute finished 14-11 overall and 8-4 in the Southeast Kansas League, defeating Holton in the first round of regionals before falling to Eudora in the championship game. With six seniors graduated, the Comets will look to Miller’s experience to fill key roles.
A three-sport athlete, Miller helped her volleyball team capture the SEK Championship and recently qualified for state in wrestling. “Wrestling helped me develop mental toughness, and that’s already helped my softball game tremendously,” she said.
Active in NHS and FFA, Miller credits her family’s athletic background for inspiring her competitive drive and accountability, “Everything is a team effort, in the end, and I firmly believe that helps me to hold myself accountable for my actions – both on and off the field.
