As a senior at Chanute High School, Wyatt Stephenson is determined to make his final track season one to remember. Competing in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles, Stephenson has set his sights on rewriting the record books while continuing the proud tradition of the Blue Comets. “I look forward to improving my times and ultimately setting a school record in the 300 hurdles,” Stephenson said. “I hope to finish my high school career satisfied knowing that I did my best.” The current school record in the 300 hurdles stands at 39.4 seconds. Stephenson’s personal best of 41.37 puts that goal well within reach. He also owns a 15.76 mark in the 110 hurdles.
After not even running hurdles as a freshman, Stephenson has developed into a top 4A state placer and finished fourth in both the high and intermediate hurdles in Southeast Kansas. He credits his growth to hard work, including building endurance by training with the cross-country team over the summer. “I gained endurance, and that’s helped me a lot,” he said.
Stephenson is also a good teammate who is laser focused on leadership. “I will be a leader and will set a good example, whether it’s in practice or in school,” he said. “I want to inspire others and help the team succeed.” The Chanute boys have been regional champions for four straight years and league champions for five, placing third at state last season.
Beyond athletics, Stephenson serves as president of FFA and FCA, is a National Honor Society member, and a four-time Ag Student of the Year. He plans to attend Kansas State University to study agribusiness and agronomy, with hopes of returning home to support the local agricultural community.
