For Macayla Askew, basketball has been about much more than just the game.
Askew, who has been playing basketball for seven years, credits the sport for teaching her discipline and perseverance through both the highs and the challenges.
“It’s been a huge part of my life,” Askew said. “I’ve had a lot of struggles with the game, but also a lot of highs that have helped me grow.”
On the court, Askew’s strengths show up in multiple ways. Her athleticism and versatility allow her to have a huge impact on both sides of the ball.
Over the past three years, Askew has advanced to the Class 6A three times, played in the title game and twice played in the third-place game.
She was named All-6A first team by Sports in Kansas and The Wichita Eagle.
She also reached major milestones in just three seasons – more than 1,000 points, more than 500 rebounds and setting the school record for steals.
“My biggest strengths are my speed, endurance, and mental toughness,” she said. “I know how to work through adversity and help my teammates through it too.”
That ability to stay composed and support others has played a major role in Derby’s team success. According to Askew, the Panthers’ identity is built on connection and effort.
“Our team’s biggest strengths were our communication, teamwork and relentless work ethic,” she said. “When we know what we can accomplish, we push each other to get there.”
Askew approaches every practice and game with a mindset centered on improvement and positivity.
“I focus on staying locked in, pushing myself and supporting my teammates no matter what,” she said. “I believe attitude and effort are everything.”
Looking ahead, Askew will take her game to the next level after committing to Elon University, where she plans to continue both her basketball and academic career.
“Elon was an amazing choice for me,” Askew said. “I know they’ll help me succeed not just in basketball, but in life.”
While her future is set, Askew remains focused on the impact she leaves behind at Derby.
“Leaving an imprint on this program means everything to me,” she said. “It’s about inspiring younger athletes, building a positive culture, and showing what dedication and teamwork can achieve.”
That mindset shows up in how she leads every day. Whether it’s mentoring younger players, organizing team activities, or simply setting the tone in practice, Askew is committed to helping the program continue to grow.
“I try to lead by example and encourage a growth mindset,” she said. “That’s how we keep getting better year after year.”
As her high school career comes to a close, Askew leaves behind more than just her performance on the court — she leaves a lasting impact on a program built on effort, unity, and belief.
