Emporia’s Atlyn Heffron – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Wichita Tractor

By Angela Brunk

Atlyn Heffron, a junior at Emporia High School, brings a blend of passion, versatility, and leadership to the softball field. As a primary catcher and true utility player, capable of handling almost any position except the pitcher’s mound, Heffron is the kind of athlete every coach dreams of.

Her motivation is rooted in a deep love for the game and the energy she draws from those around her. “I’m motivated by my team’s energy mostly,” Heffron shared. “But honestly, just the promise to play motivates me just as much. I really just love the game.”

Heffron’s journey in softball has been shaped by strong support from her dad, who has coached and encouraged her throughout her career. “He’s constantly learning more about softball and teaching me what he learns almost every day,” she said. His influence has helped instill a strong work ethic and love for continual improvement.

One of Heffron’s early mentors, Oscar Macias, her former soccer coach and current history teacher, also made a lasting impact. “Macias was my soccer coach, and even though I don’t play soccer anymore, while I played, he taught me good work ethic and how to be a good team player.”

Since her freshman year, Heffron has earned a spot on the varsity team and achieved multiple in-the-park home runs, clear signs of her growth and impact on the field. She believes that success in sports goes beyond talent. “You need to be coachable, you need to condition, keep good grades, and a lot more.”

Outside of athletics, Heffron is just as active. She’s involved in National Honor Society, the Theatre Department, and Student Athlete Leadership Team.

Looking ahead, she plans to pursue a degree in business and graphic design while continuing her softball career. To her, representing Emporia means playing with good sportsmanship and playing fair. “Coach McClure always tells us to be confident, hold our heads up high, and push through.”
