The heartbeat of Emporia High’s school spirit is powered by athletes like senior Jazlene Gonzalez. “What I love most about being a student athlete at Emporia High is getting to be involved with the school’s spirit and atmosphere while still being able to do what I love! It is so fun to see students and staff get involved with us and support our teams!” she said.
Dance has been part of her life nearly as long as she can remember. “I am currently a senior at Emporia High School, and I have been dancing for about 13 years,” Gonzalez said. That experience has shaped not just her technique, but also the way she connects with her teammates. “What makes being a Spartanette special to me is the incredible bond I have with my team. We all grew up dancing together in the same studio and competed on the same team for a few years, so getting to strengthen that bond throughout our high school years on the football field and basketball court has been such a blessing.”
Gonzalez shines when performing. “I love the swag that comes with hip-hop, and the sharpness of pom! I definitely have the best time performing these styles. Hearing the crowd and student section cheer us on makes me and my team feel really good!” she said.
Off the floor, she’s just as involved. “Apart from dance, I am currently a cheer captain, as well as vice president for Spartan Club and French Club.” That leadership carries into the classroom as well. “My favorite subjects in school would definitely be anatomy and physiology because they really helped me expand my knowledge and realize how amazing the human body is. It also prepared me for rigorous career-focused classes I am currently taking,” she said.
Family is her foundation. “The most influential people in my life have always been my grandparents. They’ve been in my corner supporting me in everything I do. I always have and will strive to be the best I can be for them,” Gonzalez shared. “Going to college next fall will make me a first-generation college student.”
Looking ahead, Gonzalez already has a vision. “After I graduate, I plan on going to college or university to pursue a career in nursing or anesthesiology.”
