Frontenac’s Ellie Bloom – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by Bekah Harlan Shelter Insurance

For Frontenac junior Ellie Bloom, one word describes her favorite part of being an athlete: community. “My favorite part about being a student-athlete at Frontenac is the community and support. We are a close group who show up and support each other,” she said.

Bloom has been on the court since she was little. “I am currently a junior at Frontenac High School. I started playing volleyball in the third grade with the Frontenac Youth League,” she said. That experience has built a strong foundation, but this year she’s seen real growth. “I believe the most improved part of my game this season would have to be understanding the flow of the game, reading the blockers and knowing where to position the ball so my hitters can be successful.”

Her role as a setter is central to the team’s success. “My team runs a 5-1, as I am the only setter. I try to set up my team in the best positions to succeed,” Bloom explained. That leadership role comes naturally, especially with her serving ability. “I like to jump serve, I believe this gives me more momentum and power to give my team the best chance to score.”

Even with her key responsibilities, Bloom is quick to recognize the teammates around her. “My senior co-captain, Lucy Anderson, is always impressing me. She is constantly moving on the court and always makes herself an option to set. She is very confident and will help you with anything you need. She is a leader who pushes you to be your best.”

Off the court, Bloom has a love for creativity. “My favorite subject in school is photography. I love capturing special moments, especially during sporting events, plus I really like the creative side of it,” she said. Her favorite teacher is someone who’s made a lasting impact. “My favorite teacher at FHS is Mrs. Aikin, FACS instructor. She is a great teacher, very supportive and is like a ‘school mom.’”

When she isn’t playing, she enjoys quality time. “In my free time, I like to spend time with my three sisters and take pictures.” Looking ahead, Bloom has her eyes on the classroom. “After I graduate, I plan to go to college and major in education. I would like to be a kindergarten or first grade teacher and a coach.”
