Gardner Edgerton’s Kenley Sutton – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Preferred Physical Therapy Kansas City

By Angela Brunk

Kenley Sutton, a sophomore at Gardner Edgerton High School, is quickly establishing herself as a dedicated and versatile athlete on the softball field. As a left-handed pitcher, hitter, and first baseman, Sutton brings a strong competitive edge and a commitment to growth that sets her apart. This season, she is especially excited about the opportunity to compete while continuing to grow both individually and alongside her teammates.

Sutton has put in significant work during the offseason to prepare for the challenges ahead. She has trained closely with her pitching coach, Tracy Bunge, and hitting coach, Mike Byrn, while also dedicating time in the weight room with Evolution Athletics. In addition, she has attended college camps and competed at a high level with Select Fastpitch, gaining valuable experience against top-tier competition.

A major focus for Sutton this year has been improving her pitch spin while adding velocity. To achieve this, she committed to a rigorous training routine that included long toss, plyometric ball exercises, and high-repetition close-range drills designed to refine different pitch spins. She also spent countless hours throwing bullpens, concentrating on maintaining proper mechanics and consistency.

Looking ahead, Sutton has set ambitious goals for herself and her team. She hopes to help lead her team to a state title while maintaining consistent performance throughout the season. Beyond high school, Sutton is looking ahead. She plans to pursue college softball in the future and study sports medicine, combining her passion for athletics with her academic interests.
