Senior sprinter Mason Adolph from Girard High School is preparing for his final high school track season with determination, leadership, and a clear set of goals for both himself and his team. Adolph competes in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4×100 relay, and 4×400 relay.
As the new season approaches, Adolph is especially excited about competing in larger meets that bring high energy and strong competition. “One in particular is Shawnee Mission North Relays. It takes place in the beginning of May in Kansas City,” Adolph shared. The event draws large crowds and talented teams from across the region, creating an atmosphere similar to the state championships. Adolph remembers running the 4×400 relay at the meet and believes his team has a real chance to challenge the school record this year, making the experience even more meaningful.
Like many student-athletes, Adolph balances a busy schedule outside of track. He often finds himself occupied performing in jazz band, marching band, and pep band. Still, whenever he finds time, he works to stay prepared by running with friends and completing workouts together.
Training sessions help him maintain conditioning heading into the competitive season.
One area Adolph hopes to improve this year is his overall speed and race times. He has incorporated workouts such as fartleks and speed endurance training with his team. The extra work has already helped him feel more prepared to compete this season.
Adolph enters the season with solid performances behind him. Last year, he recorded times of 11.62 in the 100, 23.98 in the indoor 200, and 53.2 in the 400. He also helped his 4×400 relay team post a 3:31, including a personal best split of 51.4 seconds.
While individual improvement is important, Adolph says his biggest goal is pushing his teammates—Zeb Poland, Gavin Huber, and Seth Wilson—to be their best. Together, under the guidance of coach Korey Kimrey, the group hopes to reach the state finals and ultimately break the school record.
Adolph also competes in cross country in the fall season. After graduation, he hopes to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
