After establishing herself as one of the area’s top volleyball players, Hanover senior Drew Bruna enters her final season with one goal in mind: helping lead a new group of teammates back to the state tournament.
Bruna is coming off a standout junior season in which she earned First Team All-State and First Team Twin Valley League honors while helping Hanover reach the state tournament. She recorded 369 kills and 90 blocks and reached a major career milestone by recording her 1,000th kill.
Now, with a new group of players around her, Bruna is excited for another opportunity to compete for a state berth.
“I’m most excited about senior year and the chance to get back to state with a new group of girls,” Bruna said.
Bruna spent much of the offseason preparing for her final high school season. She played club volleyball throughout the summer, competing in tournaments and at nationals. She also attended camps, participated in high school open gyms and took part in summer weights.
One area Bruna specifically focused on improving was her blocking. Her club volleyball experience provided plenty of opportunities to work on the skill and prepare for the demands of another high school season.
“I worked on improving my blocking,” Bruna said. “Playing club volleyball gave me great opportunities to work on this.”
As one of Hanover’s returning leaders, Bruna knows her role extends beyond what she can contribute statistically. She wants to use her final season to help the younger players around her develop and to set the tone for the team.
Her goals for the season center on continued improvement, leadership and teamwork.
“I just want to continue to improve and lead the girls for one more year,” Bruna said. “My personal goals and successes will all fall in line with good teamwork and communication.”
With a state tournament appearance already on her résumé and 1,000 career kills behind her, Bruna enters her senior season with plenty of experience to draw upon. But her focus remains on what she and her teammates can accomplish together.
