Hillsboro High School senior Amyah Werth has learned that athletics can build more than strength, skill and confidence. Through volleyball, she has developed resilience, leadership and a deeper appreciation for the people who have shaped her on and off the court.
Werth said the person who has influenced her most is her mother, whose example continues to guide her every day.
“The person who inspires me the most is my mom. She is the hardest worker I know, and has taught me so many lessons that I carry with me each day. She has shown me how to be the best version of myself both on and off the court. Not only was she an amazing athlete herself but is also an amazing mom, making her the best role model I could’ve ever asked for.”
As a senior, Werth values the lessons that come from competition, particularly when circumstances become difficult.
“Being an athlete has taught me how to adjust to change and deal with adversity. I’ve learned what it takes to be a good leader while winning and/or losing. I know how to push and challenge myself to do the hard things. I’ve also learned to not find my identity solely as an athlete, but I can enjoy sports knowing that I get to play for Lord.”
That perspective has helped Werth embrace her role within the volleyball program. While wins matter, she said relationships and growth are the most meaningful parts of the experience.
“What I enjoy the most about being a member of the team is getting to form relationships with the other players and being apart of the growth that happens for each player as the season progresses. With the amount of time we get to spend together, there are so many memories made that I’ll never forget.”
Werth appreciates the team’s supportive culture and its commitment to helping every player improve.
“What I love the most about my team and teammates is the drama free environment we have. Everyone gets along and we all want to each other to succeed. We have the best coaching staff who are very passionate which motivates us players to always do our very best.”
She also credits her older sister, Zaylee Werth, with leaving a lasting impact on her career. The sisters played one season together when Amyah was a freshman and Zaylee was a senior.
“The teammate that has left the biggest impression on me is my sister, Zaylee Werth. We got to play one year together in high school during my freshman year and her senior year. She knows how to be the best leader no matter what the situation may be. She stays consistently calm under pressure but always encourages everyone. Zaylee is the best volleyball player I have ever played with but also the most humble.”
Away from athletics, Werth enjoys spending time with family, watching movies and traveling to Wichita with her sisters. She also gives back by helping with summer volleyball and basketball training sessions for younger girls, attending youth group and working at the community pool.
