For Hutchinson Central Christian golfer Cael Kooiman, this season has been about refining both the physical and mental sides of his game. After helping lead the Cougars to a team state championship last season, Kooiman entered the year with higher expectations and a sharper focus on consistency.
“A few focuses I had this year were to get the mental part of my golf game better and making my swing more repeatable and consistent,” Kooiman said. “Some things I always want to accomplish in a golf season is to win tournaments.”
Kooiman has already put together another strong season on the course. He has one tournament victory and five top-five finishes this year, continuing the momentum from last season when he won two tournaments, including a regional title, while finishing seventh individually at state.
Even with those accomplishments, Kooiman believes there is still another level he can reach.
“I wanted to make a more repeatable, reliable golf swing,” Kooiman said. “I work on it in the offseason by hitting many balls in our school golf simulator.”
That dedication has helped make Kooiman one of the most dependable golfers in the area. He credits his ability to stay composed under pressure as one of the biggest strengths in his game.
“I would say one of my strengths is that I’m capable of hitting really great shots and I also consider myself pretty good under pressure,” Kooiman said.
That confidence and consistency have also made him an important piece of Hutchinson Central Christian’s lineup. Kooiman understands that every round matters in a team setting, especially during postseason play.
“I would say I help my team out the most by just playing the best golf I can play and maybe making up for a bad day one of my teammates had,” Kooiman said.
After experiencing the thrill of a team state championship last season, Kooiman has his sights set on even bigger goals this spring. While helping the Cougars return to state remains important, he is also chasing individual success.
“Make it to state as a team and win state individually,” Kooiman said when asked what a successful season would look like.”
