La Crosse’s Lee Holopirek – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Shelter Insurance

By Cooper Chadwick

Losing four starters last year doesn’t faze junior point guard Lee Holopirek who is coming off a breakout sophomore season.

Last year Holopirek averaged 14.2 ppg, three deflections per game and three assists per game. While shooting 44 percent from three. Holopirek has carried that through to this season and is looking to help his team protect their sub-state title they have had for two years now.

Since Holopirek is the lone returning starter for La Crosse he has a big role on the team this season and needs to be playing at a high level to help his team go far.

“I play the scoring role on my team. As well as trying to calm everyone down, since I’m the only returning starter,” Holopirek said. “My motivation for this year is everyone is overlooking us since we lost 4 starters last year. As well as protecting our sub state title.”

Holopirek’s drive is one of the main reasons he has had multiple 30+ point games in his career and is what makes him such a talented basketball player

“Lee is one of the most competitive, hardworking kids I have ever coached. He spends a lot of time working on his game and is turning into a great player. He is a very smart kid with a very bright future ahead of him. His competitive spirit helps him become the special player that he is,” Head coach Kyle Schmidt said.

Last season Holopirek earned awards such as all CPL Second Team Basketball as a sophomore and was a member of the Honorable Mention All-State 1A Basketball Team last year as a sophomore.
