Marion’s Eli Klenda – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by 56 Express Tire & Service

After a standout cross country season, Marion’s Eli Klenda entered track season with one clear goal in mind: getting faster when it mattered most.

“I really wanted to get faster this season in order to close faster at the end of races,” Klenda said.

That focus has helped fuel another strong year for the Marion athlete, who has already built an impressive résumé with a fifth-place finish individually at the 2025 state cross country meet and a third-place finish in the 4×800 relay at the 2025 state track meet. Klenda has also earned All-State Academic honors in both 2024 and 2025.

Klenda said one of his biggest strengths is his work ethic, something he believes benefits not only himself but also his teammates.

“I would say I’m very hard working and willing to go the extra mile,” he said. “I use this to push my teammates to help them succeed.”

That leadership extended beyond the regular season. During the winter, Klenda helped organize and lead a running group as he worked to improve his endurance and maintain the conditioning he developed during cross country season.

“I wanted to gain on the fitness I carried over from cross country and build an even stronger aerobic base,” Klenda said. “I helped lead a winter running group that ran together this winter to help achieve this goal.”

Klenda’s commitment to improvement has helped set the tone for Marion’s program as the team continues to chase postseason success. Individually, he has his sights set on qualifying for state competition once again, while also helping elevate the team as a whole.

“A successful season to me would look like qualifying for state,” Klenda said. “For our team, placing top three at our league meet and qualifying a good amount of people for state would be successful.”
