Newton senior Cody Jay plays third base and pitches for the Railers. He has been a key piece of the program since stepping into varsity as a sophomore. Since then, he has grown into one of the team’s most reliable arms and a steady presence in the lineup.

“Cody has been a varsity pitcher since his sophomore year,” head coach Evan Gilbert said. “He’s always been a key contributor on the mound and has started the year as our top arm.”

This season, Jay’s versatility has expanded even further as he has been moved into the heart of the batting order while also rotating across the infield, showing the trust the coaching staff has in his all-around game.

“Cody has a team-first attitude and is willing to do whatever he can to help others around him grow and learn,” Gilbert said.

That willingness to adapt and lead by example has been a defining part of his identity. Known for being dependable both on and off the field, Jay has become someone younger players look to as he continues stepping into a leadership role.

“He is one of those students who always does the right thing,” Gilbert said. “He continues to work hard in the weight room and on the field every year.”

While his future in baseball is still undecided, Jay remains open to continuing at the next level. If he chooses to pursue it, he has an opportunity at Hutchinson Community College, where he could continue his playing career.

“Whoever gives him a chance at the next level is getting a fantastic person and a fantastic player,” Gilbert said.
