Q&A with Emporia’s Avery Mendoza – Pom Spotlight – Presented by Wichita Tractor

VYPE: What do you love most about being a student-athlete at Emporia HS?

Avery Mendoza: What I love about being a student athlete for my high school is being involved in activities and always doing things around the community.

VYPE: What’s your favorite subject in school and do you have a favorite teacher?

AM: My favorite subject is business, and my teacher Mrs. Sweet is my favorite teacher. She constantly makes me smile and always knows what to say.

VYPE: What grade are you in and how long have you been a dancer?

AM: I am currently a senior at Emporia High School and have been dancing since I was four years old.

VYPE: What makes being a Spartanette special to you?

AM: Being a Spartanette is special to me because these my teammates are my best friends, and I love dancing with girls who continue to lift one another up.

VYPE: Is there a certain style of dance you love to perform?

AM: My favorite style of dance to perform is hip hop. I love when the crowd gets involved and hypes us up, and we, as a team, are good at it.

VYPE: Are you involved in any other clubs or sports teams at Emporia HS?

AM: I am also on the cheer team and have been for the last four years.

VYPE: Which teammate always impresses you the most or do you have a former teammate who left an impression on you?

AM: A teammate of mine that impresses me is Jazlene Gonzalez. She is such a hardworking and kills every style of dance we do. You can see how passionate she is for dance and is such a great leader for our team.

VYPE: Who inspires you?

AM: Someone who inspires me is my mom. She has done more for me than I can ever thank her for, and there is no way I’d be where I am today without her. She inspires me to always work hard and be the best person I can be.

VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

AM: In my free time, I love being around my family and friends. I am busy as I’m in high school and work, but when I have time, I love to be around the people I love most.

VYPE: What would you like to do after you graduate?

AM: After high school, I plan to attend the Paul Michell School of Cosmetology.
