Dom Matteucci’s final high school football season is going to be about more than statistics. It’s about leading a young team and making the most of every opportunity.
“As a senior, I’m very excited about having the opportunity to lead my team and make the most of my last high school season,” Matteucci said. “I’m looking forward to playing with a very fun and passionate group of guys.”
Although Sacred Heart doesn’t return many upperclassmen, Matteucci believes the Knights’ younger players bring an energy that can fuel another successful season.
“While we don’t have many returning upperclassmen, we have a lot of underclassmen who bring great energy every single day,” he said. “That energy not only makes practices enjoyable, but it also helped us achieve a winning record last season.”
That positive atmosphere has Matteucci optimistic about what lies ahead.
“I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together this year, but no matter how the season goes, I’m grateful it’s with this group of guys,” he said.
Matteucci has spent the offseason preparing for a bigger role. His weekly routine includes morning strength and conditioning workouts at school every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, along with speed and agility training on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
One area he has emphasized is becoming more explosive.
“I’ve been focused on improving my speed,” Matteucci said. “I want to be more explosive on offense, close space quicker on defense and create bigger plays when the ball is in my hands.”
He believes the combination of speed training and strength work will help elevate his game on both sides of the ball.
“Combining those two together will hopefully help me play faster and make a bigger impact this season,” he said.
After producing an impressive junior campaign, Matteucci has set lofty goals for his senior year. Last season, he recorded 82 tackles, one interception, three fumble recoveries, eight touchdowns and approximately 800 all-purpose yards. He also earned second-team all-league honors from the NCAA League and received all-state honorable mention recognition.
This fall, he’s aiming even higher.
“My individual goals are to record at least 100 tackles and reach 1,000 all-purpose yards this season,” Matteucci said.
While individual milestones are important, team success remains his primary focus.
“As a team, I want us to build on last year’s success and achieve another winning season,” he said. “More importantly, I would love to end my high school career with at least one playoff victory.”
