Salina South’s Marcus Chavez – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Spencer Cleaning

For Salina South High School golfer Marcus Chavez, success this season came down to two simple goals: compete hard and enjoy the game.

“My focus this season was to try my best and have fun,” Chavez said.

That mindset helped Chavez put together one of his strongest seasons yet for the Cougars. Known for his ability to drive the ball long distances, Chavez leaned on one of his biggest strengths throughout the year.

“My strengths are hitting the ball far,” he said.

While power off the tee was a major asset, Chavez said consistency became a key point of emphasis during the season. He focused on improving his overall stroke consistency in hopes of lowering scores and becoming a more complete golfer.

“This season I wanted to work on becoming more consistent with my strokes,” Chavez said.

The work paid off as Chavez finished the year with a 93.2 scoring average and recorded two rounds in the 80s. His best performance came at the league tournament, where he fired a season-best 82 and earned a 10th-place finish.

“That was my best finish of the season,” Chavez said.

Chavez said team success remained just as important as individual improvement throughout the year.

“A successful season for my team and I would be for all of us to play great and shoot a good score,” he said.

With steady improvement and a strong approach to the game, Chavez showed growth throughout the season while continuing to be a valuable contributor for Salina South.
