South Haven’s Kelly Theurer – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by SCCDAT

By Matt Browning

South Haven’s Kelly Theurer has been involved in SCCDAT for four years, and it was a family connection that first piqued her interest in the club.

“It all got started when my aunt talked to me about it,” Theurer said. “At the time, she was an SCCDAT staff member and was starting to get South Haven more involved in it.”

South Haven students participate in countless activities and promotions throughout the school year.

“Throughout the year, we do various activities such as chalking the sidewalks around the school for September, which is Suicide Awareness Month,” Theurer said. “In the past, we have decorated lockers around Valentine’s Day and had different guest speakers. During Halloween, we also hand out candy that has a note attached to it that promotes awareness. We also team up with our school’s FCCLA club to help with activities during Red Ribbon Week.”

Theurer said she has made many memories through SCCDAT, but one type of event stands out most.

“Some of my favorite memories from SCCDAT are when we used to participate in various parades, such as the parade during the Sumner County Fair and the Wheat Festival Parade,” Theurer said. “This is when we would show off how diverse we were, how many different schools participate and are active in SCCDAT.”

She also believes there are many reasons students should consider getting involved.

“I would definitely recommend joining SCCDAT, as it brings lots of different opportunities for various things,” Theurer said. “It teaches you facts about your community and state that you probably wouldn’t know any other way. It brings you opportunities to meet new people from different schools, and you get to team up to make plans to help your schools and communities.”
