St. James Academy’s Emmitt Peters  – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Shelter Insurance

By Blake Chadwick

Junior standout Emmitt Peters from St. James Academy has been one of the most consistent players for the Thunder.

After a 5-17 record last season, the Thunder have already surpassed that win total just 13 games into this year. Peters has played a key role in the team’s turnaround, providing steady performances and leadership on the court.

“Emmitt has been our best player since his sophomore season,” head coach Stan Dohm said. “Each year, he has added elements to his game.  He is becoming a more complete player.  It starts with his shooting.  He is a really good shooter, knocking down over 40 % from 3 the last two seasons combined. This year, he is driving the ball more efficiently and making tough 2s, which we have asked him to do.”

The junior has been able to do about everything for the Thunder but knows that his job is far from finished.

“When coach Dohm plays me he is confident that I will knock down shots and bring intensity on defense,” Peters said. “One of my personal goals is to win MVP of the EKL and to average above 18 points on the year. My team goal is to make a run in the postseason.”

With the winning mindset Peters has, he knows how infectious it is for the rest of his teammates and doesn’t let anything hold him back, whether it be the broken wrist he suffered last season or his type one diabetes diagnosis at the beginning of high school, Peters doesn’t let anything stop him from reaching his end goal of playing at the next level.
