Codie Huehl enters Sylvan-Lucas’ cross country season with plenty of motivation after finishing as the regional runner-up last year. This season, she hopes to take the next step by winning the regional championship, qualifying for state and earning the highest state finish of her career.
“I am most excited for regionals and state,” Huehl said. “I was the runner-up at regionals and I would like to win regionals this year.”
Huehl also has a personal goal of breaking the 20-minute mark in the 5K, giving her another benchmark to chase throughout the season.
“My most excitement is focused on my goal to place higher at state and run a sub-20-minute 5K,” she said.
Huehl has spent the summer preparing for those goals by staying active and training with the Kansas Flyers running team. She also competed in the AAU Junior Olympics, experiences that have helped her maintain consistency and competitiveness heading into her senior season.
“I have been staying active, working with the Kansas Flyers running team all summer,” Huehl said. “This has pushed me to stay consistent and competitive, due to the incredible hardworking and dedicated atmosphere.”
As the season approaches, Huehl knows improvement will come down to continuing to lower her times. She plans to rely on the consistency she has developed throughout the offseason to help her reach that goal.
“As always I am pushing against time,” Huehl said. “I would like to drop time on my 5K this season. I hope my consistency will leave a result on that goal.”
Huehl already enters her senior season with an impressive list of accomplishments. She was a Northern Plains League champion, finished as the regional runner-up and placed sixth at the Class 1A state meet. She also earned Academic All-State honors.
Now, Huehl wants to build on those accomplishments while making the most of her final season.
“My goals are to win regionals and make it to state, and place highest ever of my career,” she said. “I hope to leave a mark as a senior and encourage everyone to keep doing the best they can, and push themselves to do great things.”
