Sylvan-Lucas’ Zayne Maupin – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Visit Salina

After putting together one of the state’s most productive seasons a year ago, Sylvan-Lucas standout Zayne Maupin isn’t satisfied with simply repeating that success. The senior is focused on taking another step individually while helping the Mustangs chase a trip to the state playoffs.

“I’m most excited about winning games with my teammates and being back on the field,” Maupin said. “It’s great to get back out there and compete.”

Maupin established himself as one of Kansas’ top all-around performers last season. He rushed 205 times for 1,922 yards and 33 touchdowns while adding 211 receiving yards and three receiving scores. He also completed 4 of 6 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Maupin was just as impactful, recording 120 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Rather than relying on last season’s production, Maupin has spent the offseason preparing to elevate his game. He attended training camps, participated in morning workouts and focused on improving his overall conditioning.

“I’ve been going to training camps, completing morning workouts and getting into shape,” Maupin said.

One area of emphasis has been becoming a more elusive runner. Maupin identified making sharper cuts as a priority and dedicated time throughout the offseason to improving that aspect of his game.

“I want to improve on my cuts, and I have been working on that through cone drills,” he said.

Maupin has set lofty goals for his final season at Sylvan-Lucas. Individually, he hopes to eclipse the 2,500-yard rushing mark after falling just short of 2,000 yards a season ago. More importantly, he wants to help lead the Mustangs on a deep postseason run.

“My individual goal is to rush for 2,500 yards, and the team goal is to make it to state,” Maupin said.
