For Jaxon Luarks, basketball has become about much more than what happens between the lines.
The Topeka High sophomore has learned that the lessons gained through the sport can carry over into nearly every part of his life, from the classroom to his relationships with teammates and his faith.
Luarks said one of his most memorable basketball accomplishments so far came when one of his plays was featured by Kansas Prep Zone as its Play of the Week.
While the recognition was meaningful, Luarks said the bigger impact of basketball has been the person the sport has helped him become.
“This sport has taught me discipline and consistency, which ultimately has made me a better person and student and still getting better,” Luarks said.
That emphasis on consistency is something Luarks also learned from his father, who gave him advice that has stuck with him both on and off the court.
“My dad has given me the best advice to always stay leveled, never get too high and never get too low,” Luarks said. “Maintain that balance to be consistent in your everyday life.”
Luarks also credits people outside of basketball for helping shape who he is.
His favorite teacher was Mr. Roe, who taught Luarks in seventh grade. Luarks said Roe had an influence that extended well beyond the classroom by introducing him to his faith.
“He introduced me to the word of God and helped me put him at the center of my life,” Luarks said.
That faith remains an important part of Luarks’ life at Topeka High. During his freshman year, he participated in STUGO, and this year he has become involved in the Black Student Union and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
His experiences with teammates have also helped him grow.
Luarks points to former teammate Octavian McFadden as someone who made a lasting impression on him. McFadden’s approach to basketball and life provided an example Luarks said he appreciated.
“He always came to practice with a smile on his face, always competed, and helped me with things on and off the court,” Luarks said.
Those examples have helped Luarks develop an approach that extends beyond individual accomplishments.
Whether he is competing on the basketball court, participating in school activities or continuing to grow in his faith, Luarks said the values of discipline, consistency and balance remain important.
For Luarks, basketball has provided opportunities to compete and earn recognition, but its most significant impact may be the lessons he has taken with him away from the court.
And as he continues his high school career with the Trojans, Luarks is still working to become a better player, student and person.
