Ulysses’ Julian Meraz – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Shelter Insurance – Jeri Lynn Wells

By Matt Browning

Ulysses’ Julian Meraz was a key player for the Tigers’ football, but that did not stop him from getting into the gym.

“This offseason I was in the gym every single chance I got even during football season,” Meraz said. “I went to a couple of camps in the summer and got trained by some old coaches, too.”

The Tigers went just 8-12 last season, but that hasn’t prevented Meraz from thinking big about his individual chances, as well as his team’s chances in 2025. The 5-8 guard averaged eight points, four assists and one steal last year.

“My goal this season is to be a top player in the state and our league,” Meraz said. “And for our team we want to head to the state tournament.”

No matter what the 2025 season holds for Meraz, he is just excited to spend time with his teammates, which have a close bond that no win or loss could affect.

“I’m most excited to be with my guys and play with them,” Meraz said. “We’ve got great things coming together for this program and our team.”
