Averaging a near double-double last year as a freshman, Washburn Rural guard Maddie Vickery is ready to earn her way back to the State championship game.
In her first year playing high school basketball Vickery averaged 15 points per game along with eight rebounds. She earned accolades such as; 6A Player of the Year Finalist and 6A First Team All State. Vickery also led her state semi-final team in scoring, rebounds and blocks as a freshman.
Head coach Kevin Bordewick attributes Vickery success on the court to her hard work, driven attitude and competitive spirit.
“She is also humble, and is always finding ways to improve her offense and defense. She is a great person from a great family, and has high standards for her and her team,” Bordewick said.
Vickery has also recently committed to Kansas State University to play D1 Basketball, and she is excited for what her future holds as a Wildcat. .
“As I spent time with Coach Mittie and the entire staff, I just knew without any doubt that K-State is where I am supposed to play basketball in college. The culture that he has built there feels like family, it is accountable and it is one with a winning mindset. I cannot wait to be a part of that after high school,” Vickery said.
Even though Vickery is already committed to play at the collegiate level, she still has big plans for the rest of her high school career.
“After getting to the 6A State Championship game last year, the focus is on doing what we need to do in every practice and every game to earn our way back to that position,” Vickery said.
Vickery is also excited and motivated to be able to have another season of basketball with her Washburn Rural teammates.
“I have played basketball for as long as I can remember. My teams become like family and working hard for your teammates and coaches to achieve our shared goals is really a big motivation for me,” Vickery said.
