With a new season approaching, Wellington senior offensive lineman Cameron Rosenberg believes the Crusaders are ready to build on last year’s success despite replacing a talented senior class.
“I really am excited about how we’re going to fill the gaps this past year’s senior class has left us and see if we can keep up the very high standards we have here,” Rosenberg said. “I’m excited to see how much the younger starters are going to improve from the past year.”
Rosenberg said experience will be one of Wellington’s biggest strengths after fielding a relatively young team last season.
“I feel we’ve improved everywhere just because of experience,” he said. “We were a young team last year and were just getting better. It’s just getting in the reps and putting in work, whether it’s in the weight room, 7-on-7s, padded camps or mental reps. We are constantly getting better every day.”
The Crusaders have spent the summer preparing for the season with a demanding schedule. The team lifts weights and conditions every morning at 7 a.m., while skill position players compete in weekly 7-on-7 camps. Wellington also attended Fort Scott’s two-day padded camp and is scheduled to participate in a padded camp at Goddard to continue preparing for the season.
“We have been busy in the weight room and conditioning every morning at 7 a.m.,” Rosenberg said. “The skill guys have 7-on-7 camps every week. I feel they are always doing something.”
Rosenberg is confident the Crusaders’ offense has the talent to take another step forward, especially in the backfield and at wide receiver.
“I have a great feeling our backfield will be the best we’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. “Colton Elmore has more experience from last year, and John Armstrong will fill in and fit right into his brother’s spot with no problem. Jackson Curry will be one of, if not the best, wide receiver in Class 4A this year. He proved himself last year, and he’s just getting better and better.”
Individually, Rosenberg has set high expectations after an impressive junior season. He recorded 34 pancake blocks, surrendered just one sack all season and earned a grade of more than 95% in both run blocking and pass protection.
“My goals for myself are to continue to prove why I’m an all-league and all-state tackle for this team and continue to be a leader for this team,” Rosenberg said.
As for the Crusaders’ team goals, Rosenberg said they haven’t changed.
“Our team goals stay the same every year,” he said. “Ring the bell every time at home, make a push in the playoffs, stack hardware, get to that final game and win it.”
