Wichita Collegiate’s Karmari Jennings – South Central Kansas Fan’s Choice Mr. Basketball – Presented by Shelter Insurance

Kamari Jennings doesn’t step onto the court just to play basketball, he steps on with purpose.

The Wichita Collegiate School junior has built his game around more than skill and athleticism. For Jennings, every possession carries meaning rooted in family, faith, and the drive to become something greater than himself. That mindset has shaped both his growth and his impact as a key piece of his team.

“What motivates me is wanting to be successful and making my family proud every time I step on the court.”

That motivation shows up in moments that don’t always make the stat sheet, defensive stops, extra passes, and the energy he brings during pivotal runs. One of those moments stands out clearly from this past season.

“The biggest highlights for me this past season were when our team would go on runs. The one I remember the most is when we played Andale at Andale. These were always the most exciting times of the games and of the season. My other highlights would be the whole state tournament, it was something I’ve never experienced and was the greatest week of my life.”

Jennings’ approach to the game reflects maturity beyond his years, something he credits heavily to the people closest to him. His family has played a central role in shaping who he is, both on and off the court.

“My family has always been a big influence on me. My mom, dad, grandparents, and more. My sister is my biggest role model, she made it to the level that I want to, so I just look up to her, trying to get there one day myself.”

That sense of responsibility extends beyond his household and into every game he plays wearing his school’s jersey.

“It means a lot to be able to represent such a great school and community that is bigger than myself. I get to represent my school, teammates, coaches, and all the fans that supported us the entire season. It’s an honor and another thing that pushes me to be my best every time I step onto the court.”

Like any athlete, Jennings has faced adversity, but it’s how he responds that defines him. His faith plays a major role in helping him stay grounded during difficult stretches.

“The main thing that keeps me pushing when things get tough is knowing that God is by my side and that ‘God gives his toughest battles to his toughest soldiers’. Adversity shows your real character, and it just keeps me pushing because I know that there will always be good in the end.”

On the court, Jennings models his game after some of basketball’s most poised and intelligent guards, blending their traits into his own style.

“I study a lot of different players and take parts from their game, not just as a player but as a person. I like guards like Elliot Cadeau, Steph Curry, and more. These are guards that stay composed, make the right play, lead their team, and can impact the game on both ends.”

Behind the scenes, his development has been fueled by a coaching staff willing to invest time and energy into his growth.

“My coaches played a big role in my development by helping me not just as a player but as a person. They pushed me to be confident and understand the game on a deeper level. Opening up the gym on late nights and just sacrificing a lot so I had the chance to get to my best.”

Still, at the heart of Jennings’ journey is a support system that has been there from the very beginning, cheering him on through every high and low.

“My family has always been there ever since I started playing. They encourage me when things get hard, celebrate me when things are great, and remind me to always stay humble and focused. My papa used to always tell me, ‘play and have fun, you love basketball,’ and this was something that I carried with me through my journey this season. I want to also say thank you to my Mom, Dad, Aunt Kryssy, grandmas, grandpas, cousins, and everyone who showed up no matter the weather or how far the drive was to support my team and me this season.”

As Jennings continues to develop, his foundation is already firmly in place, a blend of discipline, gratitude, and belief. For him, the journey is far from over, and every game is another step toward the goals he’s chasing.
