Wichita North’s A.J. Chacon – Athlete Spotlight

For Wichita North senior A.J. Chacon, his final high school soccer season is about more than individual accomplishments. It is about sharing the field with the teammates and friends who have been part of his journey.

“I’m most excited about playing my last year with all my closest friends that I’ve made throughout the past four years,” Chacon said.

Chacon enters the season coming off a strong junior campaign in which he recorded two assists and earned second-team All-City honors as a defender.

Now, he is looking to take another step forward.

Chacon spent the offseason preparing through personal workouts and training sessions, whether he was working alone, with friends or alongside a trainer.

One area he has placed particular emphasis on is his long passing.

“I’ve been wanting to work on long passes,” Chacon said. “Over the offseason I practiced pinging the ball toward a target.”

That work is designed to help Chacon become an even more complete defender and give North another weapon when moving the ball up the field.

The RedHawks finished 8-6-2 last season and will look to make a deeper postseason run this fall.

For Chacon, the goals are ambitious on both an individual and team level.

Individually, he wants to earn first-team All-City honors and make the All-State team. As a team, he hopes North can capture a regional championship and advance deep into the state tournament.

With his final season underway, Chacon has one more opportunity to compete alongside the friends he has made throughout high school while pursuing those goals.

“I’m most excited about playing my last year with all my closest friends that I’ve made throughout the past four years,” he said.
