Wichita South’s Austin Nguyen – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

By Angela Brunk

Austin Nguyen, a senior student-athlete at Wichita South High School, has made a name for himself not only as a dominant force on both sides of the football line, playing left tackle and defensive tackle, but also on the track. This season, Nguyen entered with clear goals during football to deepen his understanding of the game, stay fit and healthy, and help build stronger team chemistry. “I wanted us to be more connected as a team and have more chemistry on the field,” he told Vype Magazine.

Nguyen is also known for throwing the shot put and discus during the spring. In the offseason, he worked hard to get stronger, faster, and more technical. He and his team attended summer camps at Goddard and Eisenhower for football and also scrimmaged each other to sharpen their skills before the season kickoff for fall football. During training, Nguyen was able to break his school’s squat record by 30 pounds, hitting a whooping 595-pound squat. This training and skills will surely pay off for Nguyen during the spring track and field season as well.

Nguyen looked forward to developing not only his skills on the field and track but also relationships with the younger players, hoping to leave a lasting impact as a senior leader for football. As far as track goes, Nguyen is looking forward to all the fun things during the season and finishing out his high school career with friends.

While Nguyen doesn’t plan to continue football or compete in track and field after high school, he is focused on his academics and has his sights set on becoming a physical therapist.
